Foxford Woollen Mills
Location: Co. Mayo
Description: The award winning Foxford Visitor Centre opened in 1992 in the centenary year of the Mills and is now one of Ireland’s premier tourist attractions, with more than 75,000 visitors to date. The 45 minute tour is designed to be both entertaining and informative and features an innovative multimedia presentation offering a breathtaking step back in time to the rural poverty of Foxford in the 1890s and shows how the mill brought prosperity to the area and fame for the beauty and quality of its products. The story comes to life with three-dimensional dioramas, lifesize ‘speaking’ models and a dramatic narration by Mayo-born actor Michael Lally. A tour of the working Mills shows the skilled craftspeople producing the famed Foxford tweeds, rugs and blankets. The giftshop displays the full array of Foxford living products as well as one of the most stunning and comprehensive collections of fashions, crafts and giftware to be found anywhere in Ireland. In the jewellery workshop, visitors can see the creation of intricate handcrafted gold and silver jewellery.
